چکیده

The behavior of classical mechanical systems is characterized by their phase portraits, the collections of their trajectories. Heisenberg's uncertainty principle precludes the existence of sharply defined trajectories, which is why traditionally only the time evolution of wave functions is studied in quantum dynamics. These studies are quite insensitive to the underlying structure of quantum phase space dynamics. We identify the flow that is the quantum analog of classical particle flow along phase portrait lines. It reveals hidden features of quantum dynamics and extra complexity. Being constrained by conserved flow winding numbers, it also reveals fundamental topological order in quantum dynamics that has so far gone unnoticed.

A Non-Markovian Phase Space Approach to Schrödinger Dynamics: The Space-Time Wigner Transform

A phase space description of Schrödinger dynamics is provided in terms of a quantum kinetic formalism relying on the introduction of an appropriate extension of the well-known Wigner transform, also accounting for time delocalizations. This “space-time Wigner distribution,” built up in the framework of two-time correlation functions, is shown to be governed by a non-Markovian, integro-different...

Revealing virtual processes of a quantum Brownian particle in the phase space

The short time dynamics of a quantum Brownian particle in a harmonic potential is studied in the phase space. An exact non-Markovian analytic approach to calculate the time evolution of the Wigner function is presented. The dynamics of the Wigner function of an initially squeezed state is analyzed. It is shown that virtual exchanges of energy between the particle and the reservoir, characterizi...

Phase space dynamics of overdamped quantum systems

The phase space dynamics of dissipative quantum systems in strongly condensed phase is considered. Based on the exact path integral approach it is shown that the Wigner transform of the reduced density matrix obeys a time evolution equation of Fokker-Planck type valid from high down to very low temperatures. The effect of quantum fluctuations is discussed and the accuracy of these findings is t...

Extracting the dynamics in classically chaotic quantum systems: Spectral analysis of the HO2 molecule

We present a scaling technique to analyze quantum spectra, i.e., to obtain from quantum calculations detailed information about the underlying important classical motions. The method can be applied to a general quantum system without a classical scaling property. A demonstration on the conventionally unassignable vibrational spectrum of the HO2 radical reveals remnants of classical broken tori ...
